Wave Attenuation in Laboratory Vegetated Flume with Different Vegetation Layouts

Abstract: This study investigates wave attenuation in a vegetated wave flume with different vegetation layouts, focusing on the interaction between waves and vegetation, considering both wave attenuation and diffraction processes. While previous research primarily addressed fully vegetated environments, this study explores the dynamics in patchy vegetated waters. The analytical model, developed based on the energy balance principle, integrates diffraction processes and considers linearly distributed mixing and turbulence at the vegetation interface. Experimental validations were conducted in a 36m × 2m × 1.3m wave flume using artificial vegetation mimicking mangroves and seagrasses. Results demonstrate significant wave height reduction within both vegetated and non-vegetated areas, showcasing the broader impact of patchy vegetation on wave attenuation. The study contributes to understanding the interplay between wave dynamics and patchy vegetation cover, with implications for coastal protection and management. Further research will investigate various vegetation types and densities to deepen our understanding of the ecological and engineering implications of wave attenuation in patchy vegetated coastal areas.
