Abstract: Nature-based solutions (NBS) are approaches where water and nature dimensions are much interconnected. Recent international recommendations advise on the importance of giving to NBS the opportunity of providing a whole range of benefits, from water management and biodiversity enhancement to promoting a spectrum of societal benefits. This work presents an overview of these opportunities and illustrates innovative NBS that connect water, biodiversity and cultural ecosystems services. The examples are from NATURELAB research project that has 15 experimental sites in 6 countries, dealing with very distinct nature spaces and promoting health, well-being and environmental sustainability. On the other hand, the Corredor do Rio Leca (CRL), an association of municipalities, has a novel approach to nature-based governance. CRL intervenes in the riverbed and banks of the Leca River, focusing on restoring, while enhancing biodiversity and promoting the well-being of local communities. This article demonstrates the relevance of collaboration among researchers, decision-makers and local stakeholders, towards the promotion of innovative NBS.
