Keywords: Expert assessment floods integrated flood risk management

Abstract: With both an increasing frequency and severity of floods, also due to a changing climate, integrated flood risk management has become more important than ever. The traditional methods of hydraulic engineers - while still vital - are now being extended by insights and methods from multiple disciplines. Social scientists bring valuable perspectives on community vulnerability, and economists help to assess the costs and benefits of different flood mitigation strategies. Where at the same time authorities create the basis for actions and practitioners foster the implementation. This multidisciplinary collaboration is essential for developing solutions that reduce flood risk and increase the resilience of our society when facing flood events. A coordinated effort, among scientists, practitioners, and decision-makers was made to assess the current stage, but also the future vision of integrated flood risk management by an in-depth expert assessment. Results indicate that the lack of standards, limited expertise, and inadequate regulations mainly pose significant challenges to implement a fully integrated flood risk management framework.
