Identifying Critical Areas for Runoff Mitigation in Sloped Urban Environments

Abstract: Densely populated and industrialized urban areas, characterized by impermeable surfaces are already subject to major flooding due to surface runoff. The risk is set to worsen with projected increases in extreme precipitation events. Existing runoff mapping tools prove to be inadequate for urban settings where intricate landscapes and infrastructure create complex water flow patterns requiring comprehensive modelling approaches. This study proposes a framework for identifying critical runoff mitigation zones in sloped urban areas. While existing studies focus on flood prediction and damage assessment, they rarely address the strategic identification of areas where mitigation measures would be most effective, particularly in complex urban terrains. Moreover, the integration of 1D sewer network modelling with 2D surface flow simulations remains largely unstructured, despite its importance for accurate urban flood prediction. This research addresses these gaps by developing a comprehensive framework that combines both aspects while prioritizing practical implementation.
