Abstract: Reservoir sedimentation is a critical challenge to the sustainability of global water storage infrastructure as it reduces the live storage of the reservoirs. This article highlights the mechanics of the hydro-suction and the available equations for the computation of critical suction velocity, velocity profile, and scour profiles. The technique has been successfully used in different reservoirs for desilting, such as Djidiouia reservoir (Algeria), Rioumajou reservoir (France), Tianjiawan reservoir (China), and Alpine reservoir (Italy), among others. The successful case studies from different countries demonstrate the adaptability and efficacy of the technique in diverse settings, achieving high sediment removal capacities and handling challenging materials like cohesive sediments and debris, with removal capacities ranging from 95 to 200 m3/h. With its cost-effectiveness and minimal environmental impact, hydro-suction offers a practical and sustainable approach to address reservoir sedimentation, ensuring the longevity and functionality of water storage systems worldwide.
