Abstract: In recent years, machine learning techniques have emerged as a powerful tool in modelling complex non-linear relations. They have been applied widely in solving different water resources problems. This study will critically review the use of different machine learning techniques in predicting bridge scour depth. The study will use a systematic literature review to identify the trends in the use of machine learning techniques in predicting bridge scour depth. The study will also examine the limitations and the barrier to the acceptance to the use of machine learning techniques in predicting bridge scour depth. These barriers include the difficulty in interpreting machine learning solutions in physically meaningful way. The study will discuss different ways to support the interpretation of machine learning solutions in predicting bridge scour depth.
