Abstract: The purpose of this study is to develop a prediction method or theory that can be applied to more complicated structures or situations than a simple vertical drop. At first this study made exhaustive review of past works, and collected and arranged past experiments results. Then experiments were conducted in the range where the past results were scarce. This set of wide-ranged experimental results was checked and investigated. Applicability of past formulas was reconsidered based on it. According to these results, following conclusions were obtained. Both experimental results and prediction formulas of past studies are widely scattered. Each prediction formula has each range where shows good agreement with certain experimental results. However, there is no formula which can be applied universally. In addition, the concept of the equivalent drop height was proposed and showed that it is closely related to energy loss at a vertical drop.
