Abstract: Sediment transport plays important role in maintaining ecological function in the estuary. One main parameter to describe sediment transport is the river discharge in its waterbody. Nowadays, estimation method of sediment transport using MODIS images are being developed. This method utilizes the surface reflectance value, which contains effects that are not related to the fluctuation of river discharge such as atmospheric radiation and direct reflection by water surface. Using atmospheric correction method, the correlation between water surface reflectance value and the river discharge is higher. However, it is necessary to clarify this relationship in different estuarine conditions. In this study, estuaries in the northern and southern coast of Java Island were studied. The result showed different characteristics that might impact the relationship between surface reflectance value of MODIS daily images and the river discharge. In Serayu River, which is in southern coast, showed strong relationship compared to that of Cimanuk River, which is on the northern coast of Java. This difference might suggest a different approach to analyze river discharge by using MODIS daily image, especially to understand the period of sediment movement which also has the influence to surface reflectance value. The daily discharge estimation may have some biased if the daily surface reflectance value does not represent the daily sediment concentration.
