Study on Cause and Mechanism of Hydraulic Structures Failure in Bangladesh

Abstract: Bangladesh is a low-lying deltaic country formed by the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and the Meghna rivers and crisscrossed over 405 rivers and tributaries. The country is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world, with great negative consequences being associated with various natural and human-induced hazards. Riverbank erosion and embankment failure are serious problem. Sometimes these phenomena have a big impact on people life, such as loss of land, property, food and so on. Riverbank development and maintenance are one of the biggest challenges in the country. In this study, the collection of data and information of the present condition of river embankment and river structures were conducted by field survey and boring investigation. The causes and mechanisms of embankment failure then analyzed by using seepage analysis and circular slip analysis, based on the results of the field inspections and flood situations in Bangladesh. It was found that most of the embankment failures in Bangladesh are caused by instability with riverbed erosion progress approaching to embankment. The failure by seepage is not common in Bangladesh. More importantly, a novel concept of riverbank protection structure as pilot construction in Moulvibazar district were introduced.
