Abstract: There are many ways to predict the occurrence of debris flow. The most common method is statistical method. It considers rainfall characteristics in term of intensity, duration, cumulative, and antecedent and the dependency on the debris flow occurrence. However, the implementation of the rainfall threshold requires large data to get better threshold, and sometimes, it can only be applied for the local or regional meteorological condition. Understanding of the runoff generation can be achieved by the implementation of hydrology model. A distributed rainfall runoff model has been applied for studying the distribution of the runoff depth in responding to the rainfall. This method is considered as a good tool for estimating rainfall triggered debris flow. This paper introduced method to evaluate spatial distribution of initiation area of debris flow. Determination of the debris flow initiation used a theoretical study of debris flow triggering mechanism. From the previous research, debris flow can be initiated by erosion process. The increase of surface runoff caused by heavy rainfall may cause serious bed erosion which gradually transforms into debris flow. This phenomenon can be found in the volcanic area which has huge loose deposit materials on the flanks as the product of volcanic activity.
