Abstract: In the present study, the resonance phenomena of the oscillation of the fluid column between a vertical wall and a rectangular barge are analysed by employing a meshless method known as improved meshless local Petrov–Galerkin method with Rankine source function (IMLPG_R). Both fixed and moving cases of the barge are analysed for regular waves having constant steepness. The amplification of the wave inside the gap and the horizontal force acting on the barge are compared for both cases. For the fixed barge case, wave amplification at resonance is estimated to be 27% higher than that of the floating barge. The instantaneous velocity and vorticity fields near the gap are drawn for the wave corresponding to the resonance frequency, and salient conclusions are also made based on the observations.
