Abstract: The spillway of the Mediano Dam has no constructed stilling basin. The successive flow events have not caused any important damages, except of the siltation of the mouth of the powerplant in the year 1983, when the flow through the spillway surpassed 1500 m3/s. The object of the present study is to analyse whether the current situation is safe, or a new stilling basin needs to be designed and built. The study has been developed with a physical model with scale 1:70. Two main test campaigns have been carried out, in the first one it is estimated the maximal scour that is produced in the riverbed with different flow rates and different granulometries, and, in the second one, it is measured the impact received by the ground, in order to compare it with the geotechnical information.
