Abstract: The physics of lock-in under von Karman vortex shedding is captured using a two-way modal fluid-structure interaction approach, achieved by coupling a single-degree-of-freedom oscillator with an unsteady computational fluid dynamics solution on a mode-by-mode basis. This method is applied to the girder of a butterfly valve, for which experimental data is available. The simulation results reveal a range of incoming velocities where the response frequency deviates from the natural vortex shedding frequency and locks onto the natural frequency of the structure with significant vibration amplitudes. A good agreement is observed between the simulation and experimental results. The influence of relevant flow and structure properties on the lock-in dynamics is explored.
