Abstract: This work presents a one-dimensional hydraulic model for simulating sluice gates in openchannel flows. The gate is represented as an internal boundary where the local Riemann Problem between upstream and downstream states is solved exactly. This yields a robust and physically consistent treatment of gate-controlled flows, especially in sharp transients and during rapid transitions between flow regimes. Particular emphasis is made in the generality of the formulation, which is able to solve the discharge through the gate in both free flow and drowned flow conditions without input from the user.
