Abstract: Water flow is a dominant environmental feature that provides critical sensory cues for fish, influencing both decision -making and swimming performance. Sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus), a species of conservation concern in its native region and a target for invasive species control in the Laurentian Great Lakes, exhibit movement behaviours mediated by hydrodynamic signals such as flow direction, velocity magnitude, turbulence, and recent experience. Recent studies using acoustic telemetry and computational fluid dynamics reveal sea lamprey respond to multiple hydraulic cues, with behaviours shaped by context-specific factors like energy conservation and predator avoidance. Understanding these responses offers valuable insights for improving invasive species control strategies and informing conservation efforts.
