Ecohydraulic Assessment of Watershed Hydrological Services Using the VIC Model: A Case Study of the Luan River Basin, North China

Abstract: Using the VIC distributed hydrological model, this study quantitatively evaluates the spatio -temporal dynamics of hydrological ecosystem services, including water-supply (WS) and water-retention (WR), in the Luan River Basin from 1980 to 2018, and examines the joint influences of climate change and vegetation restoration. Here, WR is defined as a hydrological regulation index derived from soil water storage and baseflow, representing the capacity of ecosystems to retain precipitation and sustain delayed release. The results show decreasing precipitation, increasing air temperature and evapotranspiration, and significantly rising NDVI. Over the study period, WS decreased by 16.81%, whereas WR increased by 5.66%, revealing a clear trade-off between enhanced re gulation and reduced water yield in this water-scarce basin. The spatially explicit results provide useful evidence for ecological restoration, blue–green infrastructure planning and water management under stringent water-resource constraints in northern China.
