“Bri: Bioengineered River Island” a Promising Construction Type for River Restoration. Constructive Approaches and Practice-Based Experiences

Abstract: The structural and habitat diversity of rivers is crucial for their ecological function . Many Swiss rivers have been heavily modified and exhibit pronounced morphological and ecological deficits. In addition to restoration measures altering a river's course and cross-sectional profile, targeted structuring measures are a valuable approach for achieving ecological objectives. In this context, the construction type “bioengineered river island” (BRI) was developed. It significantly increases the availability of ecologically valuable and self-sustaining riverine structures, thereby improving the provision of dynamic and small -scale aquatic and semi-aquatic habitats. This construction type has already been implemented in several Swiss rivers. In this publication, we describe the construction type in detail and provide an initial report on practical experience.
