Abstract: The contribution summarizes the developments and findings concerning fish protection and fish guidance with horizontal screens, as featured by the hydro shaft power plant concept. This novel arrangement of a horizontal screen plane with an adjoining bypass corridor yielded promising results to establish favorable conditions for fish downstream migration at hydropower installations when investigated at a small-scale prototype in a laboratory channel. Meanwhile, a full-scale river site HPP was implemented and a monitoring was conducted. The data was now used to evaluate the performance for fish protection and fish guidance and the results were benchmarked with the laboratory findings. Beside the basic function as mechanical barrier for large fish, the behavioral barrier effect for small fish was confirmed and quantified for the large-scale facility. Moreover, the influence of structural details as groundsills on particular fish species was affirmed.
