Low-Temperature Adaptability Test of Winterization Strategies for Marine Equipment Under Polar Environment Condition

Abstract: Due to global warming and the increasing demand for polar resource development, the strategic significance of polar regions has been upgraded. However, the harsh natural environment characterized by sub zero temperatures, sea ice, icebergs, and blizzards imposes strict requirements on the design, material selection, and environmental adaptability of marine equipment. Polar vessels must ensure high reliability under extreme conditions to ensure safe navigation during polar night and icing operations. Key challenges include material degradation (such as embrittlement, seal hardening), lubricant viscosity fluctuations leading to operational failures, temperature sensitivity of electronic components, and additional ice loads caused by frosting/icing on equipment surfaces. In addition, rapid de icing and insulation technology remain key unresolved issues for polar equipment. This study experimentally investigated the performance degradation mode of typical ship equipment under simulated extreme low temperature conditions (as low as -60 °C). Through system testing of mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic systems, key fault mechanisms were identified and optimization strategies were proposed, providing a validated technical solution for the next generation of polar vessels.
