Abstract:
Marine outfall systems stand as a critical interface between human civilisation and the global ocean. As we move towards 2030, these systems face multiple challenges including: adapting to a rapidly changing climate, continued population growth and the need to adhere to increasingly stringent environmental standards. This article presents an overview of how research and innovation has enabled a shift from static disposal pipes to more dynamic, resilient, and digitalised systems that can safeguard both public health and marine biodiversity. By analysing case studies, it can be demonstrated how advanced outfall engineering serves as a linchpin connecting SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water).
