Abstract: The paper presents a numerical model based upon the Reynolds equations with a one-equation turbulence closure. A finite element formulation with a weak form of the method of characteristics is applied. Numerical results are presented for flow around a truncated cylinder in longitudinal oscillations, and for twodimensional stationary flow towards a fixed or oscillatory cylinder. Dynamic separation and vortex generation are predicted realistically. Hydrodynamic forces, Strouhal number and other relevant quantities are compared with measurements. Generally the numerical predictions are in good agreement with the experimental results.
