Abstract: This paper presents a theoretical and experimental analysis of flow in a channelwith a bed slot spanning the entire width of the channel. A simple theoretical expression derived for the coefficient of discharge for the bed slot is substantiated by experiments. Resolution of the momentum equation along the flow direction yields a simple equation for the brink depths ratio which is verified by experiments. The influence of the slot length on the diverted discharge is evaluated and an empirical formula describing the relationship is proposed.
