Luleå is considered as the world's largest brackish water archipelago with 1,312 islands, several rivers and vast forestland. Luleå has the seventh biggest harbor in Sweden, a large steel industry and is a center for extensive research. Luleå University of Technology is one of Sweden's three technology universities with around 15,000 students and is the northernmost university in Sweden.

Over 100 abstracts have been received and due to numerous requests the deadlines for abstract submission and special sessions and workshops proposals have been extended until 30 and 15 November respectively.

 Invitation Message from the Chair

Dear Esteemed Guests and Participants,

We are delighted to welcome you to the 9th IAHR Europe Congress, Arctic Waters and Beyond: Innovating Hydro-Environment Engineering for a Sustainable Future in Luleå, Sweden, 9-12 of June 2026. This gathering brings together leading minds, researchers, and professionals dedicated to advancing hydro-environment engineering and exploring sustainable solutions for our planet's most critical water challenges Read more

We look forward to welcoming you to Luleå for valuable scientific exchange, the magic of the midnight sun, and the beauty of our northern nature—most strikingly showcased at the majestic Storforsen Rapids, where the conference dinner will take place!

 Announced High Level Panels

Both panels will bring together leading experts from research, industry and politics within these fields, offering both thought-provoking discussions and inspiration for the future of hydro-environment engineering.

 First Confirmed Keynote Speakers

  • Patrick Huber, Hamburg University of Technology, Germany is an expert in materials science and condensed matter physics. In his crossdisplinary keynote lecture he will focus on the role of water and fluid dynamics in "blue materials", that reveal their functionality in water or aqueous environments.

  • Pernille Erland Jensen, Technical University of Denmark. Her research focusses on environmental engineering solutions for Arctic communities including handling of wastewater and organic waste fractions, and remediation of contaminated grounds. In her keynote lecture she will provide fascinating insights into wastewater management in artic regions and her research on Greenland.

Call for abstracts extended until 30 November!

The extended abstract should address one of the four central themes of the congress. The extended abstract must not exceed two pages. Submissions will be considered either for a poster or an oral presentation. Read more

Call for Special Sessions extended until 15 November

We invite proposals for Special Sessions to be held as part of the Congress programme.

What is a Special Session?

A special session is a special type of parallel session with a particular title and content, under the responsibility of a particular institution, consortium of institutions or convener(s). Read more
