Call for proposals host CoastLab2028 (2).png

11th International Conference on Physical Modelling in Coastal Science and Engineering (CoastLab2028)

The IAHR Technical Committee on Coastal and Maritime Hydraulics is inviting the interested parties to submit proposals to host the CoastLab28 in 2028. Those interested to organise CoastLab28 please send a proposal to the chair of the IAHR Technical Committee on Coastal and Maritime Hydraulics on or before 1st July 2026. The proposal needs to include: location and timeframe, a budget plan, registration cost for faculty and students and sponsorship and support (if any).

1. Event

CoastLab is a Conference whose focus is on Physical Modelling in Coastal Engineering and Science. CoastLab is organized under the auspices of and in collaboration with the Technical Committee on Coastal and Maritime Hydraulics of the International Association of Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR).

2. Duration

3 (three) full days plus a 1 (one) day short course on the day prior to the conference first day of sessions.

3.Themes

CoastLab28 will provide a stimulating and enriching forum to discuss the latest developments in coastal, port and offshore engineering and coastal science. Papers that describe new research, technical innovation, and interesting real-world case studies and projects are encouraged. The conference topics may include, but not limited to:

  • Estuarine and coastal hydrodynamics, nearshore processes

  • Sediment transport, erosion, sedimentation

  • Storm surge, coastal flooding, shore protection

  • Coastal and ocean structures, breakwaters, revetments

  • Wave-structure interactions, loading, response

  • Wave runup and overtopping

  • Wave and tidal energy

  • Physical modelling case studies

  • Laboratory technologies, measurement systems

  • Wave synthesis, generation and analysis

  • Scale effects and uncertainty analysis

  • Combined physical and numerical modelling

  • Extreme events – assessment and mitigation

  • Contaminant and pollutant transport, water quality

  • Climate change impacts, adaptation, mitigation

  • Coastal field measurement and monitoring

  • Ports, marine terminals, navigation, ship motions

  • Coastal management and natural-based solutions

  • AI and coastal engineering application

4. Logistics

Fee Structures: the same structure as the one followed by past CoastLab conferences. Delegates who are members of IAHR or of any other professional organisation who is endorsing the event benefit from a reduced registration rate. Special fees for students should also be considered.

Profit: IAHR receives 5% of the registration fee income from CoastLab conferences. The profit/loss recorded at the end of this event is the responsibility of the Local Organising Committee (LOC).

5. Expected attendance

Around 100 papers with around 120-160 people attending and registering only for this event. Although this is also dependent on the venue and the marketing effort.

6. Support

IAHR:

  • Participate in the Scientific Committee of CoastLab28

  • Advertising

  • and more!

LOC:

  • Bidding to host the next CoastLab28

  • Preparing a brief of their bid and presenting it to the members of the IAHR Technical Committee on Coastal and Maritime Hydraulics

  • Setting up the Local Organising Committee

  • Advertise the event

  • Organising the conference (website, logistics for the location, all preparations, etc.)

  • Proposal for paper publication. Special issue in a scientific journal is encouraged

7.Timing of CoastLab28

The LOC will ensure that CoastLab28 will be held such that it would avoid scheduling competition with other major coastal engineering or coastal science conferences.

Those interested to organize CoastLab28 please send a proposal to the chair of Technical Committee on Coastal and Maritime Hydraulics on or before 1st July, 2026. A proposal that includes location and timeframe, a budget plan, registration cost for faculty and students and sponsorship and support (if any) is what is expected.
