We are pleased to announce the keynote speakers of the upcoming 7th edition of the IAHR Young Professionals Congress, as follows:

Ricardo Rebel, TU Dresden, Germany

"From Spheres to Realistic Sand Grains: Turbulent Sediment Transport Through Direct Numerical Simulations"

How does grain geometry influence sediment transport? This presentation addresses this question through particle-resolved direct numerical simulations (DNS), following the progression from spherical particles through ellipsoids to realistic sand grains. Early studies with spheres provided insight into the roles of turbulence and collisions in particle entrainment, as well as collective particle motion. Subsequent simulations with ellipsoidal particles showed how macroscopic grain shape affects particle dynamics, bed structure, hydraulic resistance and sediment transport rates. Resolving such non-spherical shapes already introduces substantial computational challenges, particularly in detecting and modelling particle contacts and collisions. The central advance moves beyond idealized shapes to capture the irregular geometry of natural sand, culminating in the first DNS of turbulent sediment transport with microscopically realistic sand grains. These simulations reveal further effects of irregular grain geometry on particle motion, sorting effects, rotational energy and hydraulic resistance. The presentation highlights the physical insights gained along this progression and the new questions that arise as simulated grains become more realistic.

"Tracing Groundwater Nitrate Contamination in Morocco: From National Assessment to Source Apportionment in the Tadla Aquifer"

This presentation examines groundwater nitrate contamination in Morocco, connecting a national overview with a detailed case study of the Tadla aquifer. It explores how hydrochemical analyses, isotopic tracers and Bayesian mixing models can be combined to identify nitrate sources and quantify their contributions, with implications for agricultural nitrogen management and groundwater protection.
