Overview

Journal of Applied Water Engineering and Research | Vol. 8. Issue 4, December 2020This issue brings together a collection of research and engineering contributions within the disciplines of fluid dynamics, computational hydraulics, hydrology, or remote sensing applied to water systems such as water distribution networks, open channels, and dams, up to the river basin scale. One article contributes to the basic understanding of acoustic cavitation and how it is affected by fluid compressibility, while fundamental research on channel hydraulics is described in another paper focusing on an analysis of opposing channel flow by means of CFD software. This issue also contains more applied research work, with contributions addressing direct engineering problems such as user-friendly and open-source software for the design of water distribution systems; the use of artificial intelligence techniques for the assessment of water quality in smart cities; and the application of CFD software, in this case to assess the effect of stratified conditions in granite dams. Additionally, a new and promising forecasting platform for river basin management is introduced that will enable the integration of multiple models at a higher level of accuracy. All in all, this issue presents a set of research contributions tackling cardinal aspects of water science and engineering that may attract the interest of not only academics but also practitioners.
