The number of extreme weather events around the world has been steadily increasing over the last few years, including unusually intense storms causing catastrophic flooding that often results in loss of life and major property damage. The current issue of Hydrolink looks at the extreme floods last summer in parts of Germany, Belgium, China and New Zealand. Four articles written by local academics and other technical experts discuss these events in the context of historical data and development in these areas, and draw lessons that could help improve flood risk management in the future.
