The Effect of Salinity Stratification on Sedimant Transport in Minamata Bay

Abstract: The present paper shows the effects of baroclinic flows on the sediment transport in the Yatsushiro Sea by numerical simulations in order to develop a numerical model for mercury dynamics and fate dispersed from Minamata Bay. As a result of the present research, we concluded as follows: 1) Baroclinic flows can significantly affect the long-term sediment transport in the Yatsushiro Sea around Minamata Bay; 2) The northward transport is generated by the baroclinic flows, while the westward transport by the barotropic flows; and 3) In order to simulate accurate mercury distribution from Minamata Bay for a long term, we need to take account of both baroclinic flows and barotoropic flows.
