Application of 2-D Numerical Model for Habitat Conservation of Endangered Fish Species in Korea

Abstract: In the present study, a two-dimensional (2-D) numerical model simulates the physical habitat of an endangered fish species, Liobagrus obesus, in Korea in order to conserve and expand its habitat environment. For the research purpose, the habitat environment of the target fish has been surveyed in the Jiseok stream in the Yeongsan river basin located in southwestern region of Korea. The target fish species preferably inhabits riffles with gravel and rapid flow. River2D which is a depth averaged finite element hydrodynamic model is applied to simulate Weighted Usable Area (WUA) for the target fish in the study area. Application of the 2-D hydrodynamic model can inform better understanding of the physical and hydrodynamic properties for the target fish in a stream. In addition, the simulation results can be utilized to survey and find similar habitats in different streams with the objective for expanding inhabitable area of the target fish by its releasing into preferable habitat environment.
