Abstract: Salt water intrusion in low lying coastal zones is a function of numerous inter related elements. Here, first identification of overall issues relating to the estuarine environment and its management has been made clear. Next, the parameters related to sea water intrusion and artificial and natural changes that influence their behavior have been identified. Thereafter, this study investigates the salt water intrusion mechanism taking into consideration the estuaries in the Galle District in the southern province of Sri Lanka with emphasis on important issues related to performance of outfalls in the related area. Thereby overall management strategies have been proposed to maintain the optimum balance of salt water in low lying coastal areas.
