Abstract: Large eddy simulation was used to investigate the flow around a wall-mounted circular cylinder at a Reynolds number of Re D =39000 based on the diameter D and the bulk velocity. A fully developed turbulent boundary layer was applied as inflow boundary condition. Around the cylinder the grid is resolved by 4 wall units in horizontal directions and 1 wall unit in vertical direction, based on the wall shear stress of the oncoming boundary layer. This allows for a detailed study of the wall shear stress around the cylinder in space and time. We assessed the dependence of the wall shear stress and the vortex system in front of the cylinder on the grid resolution and inflow condition. Both showed a strong influence. We observe that in the finest grid the wall shear stress is amplified by a factor of 11. 9 with respect to the one in the oncoming boundary layer.
