Abstract: The longitudinal development of compound channel flow and the corresponding mixing and boundary layers are investigated. An experimental campaign was carried out in a laboratory compound channel. Six uniform flows were generated comprising (i) three on floodplains made of polished concrete and (ii) three on synthetic grass covering the floodplains. The shallowness and the floodplain roughness effects on the longitudinal development of the streamwise velocities and of the lateral shear stress are also evaluated.
