Constructing a Correlation Between Flow Resistance of Circular Corrugated Pipes and Geometric Parameters Using CFD Methods

Abstract: It is a significant issue to dissipate kinetic energy of stormwater or wastewater flowing along steep terrains since highly supercritical flow corresponding to excessive velocities may cause a dramatic damage in underground drainage pipes. For this purpose, using pipes with increased flow resistance by applying corrugated inner profile is a suitable application. However, it cannot be analytically known a priori how flow resistance of a pipe changes with geometric characteristics of artificial roughness element. The main scope of this paper is to construct a reasonable correlation between corrugated circular pipe roughness, represented by Manning’s “n” , and various geometric characteristics of corrugation profile (represented by its amplitudewavelength ratio) through numerical studies. The commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) package ANSYS Fluent is employed in numerical solutions, through which resistance effect of some geometric sets of corrugation pattern has been investigated.
