Determination of the Quality of Water Hammer Software Using Lab and Field Measurements

Abstract: Around the world pipeline systems are used to transport fluids from one location to another. Simulations are performed with computer software to design safe and reliable systems. The quality of the results depends upon the quality of the software used and the quality of the data. This paper describes a method to determine the quality of the software based on measurement data. Furthermore the effect of the quality of the data is discussed. The quality of the software can be determined with the so called transient performance indicator (TPI). In this paper the use of the TPI is shown including a correction for the error in the measurements to determine the quality of Wanda. Wanda is the in-house developed and commercially available software package of Deltares for the simulation of pipeline systems. Results of simulations with Wanda are compared to two measurements series, one laboratory experiment and one field measurement. The data from the lab experiments are used to determine the quality of Wanda, since the system is well determined and therefore the effect of the quality of the data is small. The TPI for this set is in the range of 1% up to 3. 5% . The field measurements, which have a larger set of unknowns, result in a TPI in the range 5-6% . This paper uses only two sets of experiments while it is preferred to use a larger set of experiments to show the quality of the water hammer software for different systems. The main improvement in the quality of the results can be obtained by increasing the quality of the measurement data. Furthermore the TPI gives a good insight into the quality of the software, and it is recommend using this parameter as performance indictor of water hammer software. However, it is recommended to improve the TPI and especially the weighing factors by doing a more detailed analysis of the results.
