Abstract: This paper first exposes a new formulation of the potential flow theory to derive the pressure profile on an inclined gate in submerged conditions, confirmed by experiments for both freeflow and submerged flow conditions in an open-channel flume. The force exerted on the gate is then calculated from the pressure profile, prior to the estimation of the contraction coefficient by means of the energy-momentum balance. A crucial merit of the approach defended here is to ensure continuity between flow regimes, and to deal with many configurations of check gates existing in open-channel distribution networks.
