Abstract: This paper briefly reflects upon John Fisher Kennedy’s contributions to the advancement of river engineering. Kennedy (1933-1991) had a remarkable career, and was (at the time) the youngest member ever elected to the National Academy of Engineering. He was the foremost U. S. authority on river engineering and research during the latter part of the 20th century, especially regarding sediment transport and loose boundary hydraulics, as well as the numerous engineering problems associated with these processes.
