Abstract: The presence of the lines of boil, consisting of low speed streaks, periodically in the transverse direction, is reported in literature due to the initiation of the sand ridges. A numerical analysis on the distribution of shear stresses on the bed and sidewalls of trapezoidal channel sections, having ridges on its bed, using CFD approach is done. The commercially available CFD software ANSYS-CFX version 11 (2008) is used for this purpose. Simulations are run on channel sections having variation in slant angles to study the effect of this variation on the flow structures and ultimately shear stress distribution in trapezoidal channels. An analysis is also carried out on the secondary currents. The results show good insight in to the three dimensional flow structures thus created.
