Experimental Optimization of a Piano Key Weir to Increase the Spillway Capacity of the Malarce Dam

Abstract: The Piano Key Weir is an interesting concept to increase the total effective crest length for a given spillway width and it has been used on various EDF dams to increase the discharge capacity of the related spillways. The Malarce dam is already equipped with 3 gated spillways and the addition of a Piano Key Weir on the right bank of the dam has been optimized on a physical model at a 1: 60 scale to increase the total discharge capacity from 3950 to 4600 m3/s. Four PK-Weir alternatives have been tested. Three of them had no downstream overhang and their heights and wall thicknesses were different. The last one had upstream and downstream overhangs. For each design, we have measured the discharge characteristics of the sole PK-Weir at various crest levels. Then the design flood was tested with both the PK-Weir and the 3 existing spillways. This study has also determined some civil engineering structures to improve the flow upstream of the PK-Weir and the energy dissipation downstream. This paper presents the tests results performed on the physical model to optimize the PK-Weir design and the upstream and downstream structures.
