Experimental Study on Sediment Erosion and Transportation Due to Rainfall

Abstract: In this study, the results of five experimental cases consisting of ten experiments using different sediments with two different rainfall conditions are reported, summarizing the hydrograph of the overland flow, particle size distribution of the out-flow sediment, moisture profiles within the soil domain, and surface topography after the sediment transport from a 3. 0m long × 0. 8m wide × 0. 7m deep flume that was set at 17_o_ slope. In the cases of coarser sediment soil domains and low rainfall condition, the overland flow was delayed than the finer sediment soil domains and the high rainfall condition. Similarly, moistures movement inside the soil domain was faster in coarser sediment soil domains and high rainfall condition. These phenomena were the usual one as per the expectation before the experiments. However, comparison of particle size distribution of original soil bed and the out-flow sediment was found opposite to the common view among researchers that sediment leaving an area is finer than that of the soil under surface erosion. In the case of uniform sediment used experiments, the difference of particle sizes of original soil bed and the out-flow sediment was insignificant.
