Abstract: During impoundment period, density current phenomenon is prone to appear in reservoir on sediment-laden River in General. Continuous motion conditions of density current in reservoir are important prerequisites for prediction of sediment flushing. In this article, based on predecessors’ research, before density current sneaking into the water, variation characteristics on flow and sediment transportation of open channel flow are studied, combined with the generalization on density current process and Froude number analysis methods, prediction of continuous movement critical time of density current in reservoir has been calculated. And data surveyed in Xiaolangdi reservoir has been validated, the results are legitimate. The research results could be used for scheduling decisions on regulating water and sediment of Xiaolangdi reservoir in real time, raising the level of reservoir operation.
