Abstract: The application of a conservative finite volume numerical scheme for the simulation of transient shallow water flow coupled with solute transport is presented. Transient tracer tests in a laboratory meandering channel are numerically simulated. The simulations show the importance of a careful discrete representation of the initial flow conditions and the good behaviour of the coupled scheme for the solute transport in unsteady flow conditions. A method for the evaluation of the longitudinal and transverse dispersion coefficients in unsteady flow conditions by comparison with experimental data is given. Mixing characteristics of pollutants in a pseudo natural stream are numerically examined.
