Abstract: Resistance coefficient is an important parameter in hydraulic modelling of open channel flow. Uncertainty exists in roughness coefficient due to its naturally inherent variability, which leads to uncertainty in predicting or estimating flow characteristics. The unsteady surface water profiles in open channel flow subject to periodic piecewise constant roughness field and random roughness field in a prismatic channel with constant inflow are analyzed. The Monte Carlo simulation is employed to conduct the stochastic modelling. Impacts of stepwise roughness in deterministic case and correlation length of the roughness coefficient in random field on the flow responses are assessed. Results of stochastic modelling provide information essential for reliability assessment and risk analysis of hydro-systems related to the flow dynamics and thus can be used to support a more rational engineering decision making.
