Abstract: The design and optimization of dam and spillway geometry is discussed in this article. Taking into account a portion of the reservoir effective volume for the purpose of flood control can be of great advantage to the dams that are located in dry areas, the reservoirs of which are almost empty in most of the year time. Using this idea, the spillway dimensions and reservoir level are studied and optimized for an Iranian dam as the case study.
