The Improving of an Analogical Dye Tracer Methodology of the Far Field Submarine Outfall Plume Dispersion

Abstract: Physical simulations through models are good tools to evaluate hydrodynamic marine performances, but they effectively depend on the field data for a good calibration and validation. The coastal and estuarine circulation is very important marine environmental data to have a full knowledge about hydrodynamics of the effluent disposal area for a submarine outfall. Sao Paulo State coast has many outfalls operating and the first built is located in Santos Bay, Southeastern Brazil. The physical model of Santos Estuary and Bay used for this study can reproduce local tide and regular waves. At first, the physical model was calibrated and validated considering the present natural condition. Once calibrated and validated the model, it was carried out several tests to investigate the change of the currents, sediment transport and effluent dispersion. This paper describes the dye injection tests with the corresponding results of field data sampled during previous study performed by Sao Paulo State Basic Sanitation Company (SABESP). The tests are related with a far field tidal hydrodynamical condition. The study of effluent dispersion was simulated in spring tide, corresponding to the strongest intensity of tidal current circulation.
