Abstract: Large woody debris (LWD) is installed in King County, Washington, USA agricultural drainage ditches to provide hydraulic diversity for fish. However, the effectiveness of LWD in providing hydraulic diversity in this setting is not clear. In this study, the influence of installed LWD on the flow field was investigated in two King County drainage ditches. This was accomplished through a combination of field observations and numerical simulations. Limited hydraulic diversity was observed in the wake directly behind the installed LWD. The numerical simulations indicated the presence of a limited velocity shelter less than 20 cm downstream of the LWD. It was concluded that the installation of LWD in King County drainage ditches is not an effective method for increasing hydraulic diversity.
