Abstract: This paper evaluate both the rate of water penetration of Tubarao River into the Imarui Lagoon, and the influence of the landfill in Laranjeiras Canal over the water circulation in this lagoon, in the Southern Region of Santa Catarina State - Brazil. It is investigated the viability of partially or completely removing the existing landfill in order to improve water circulation. A discussion on the results of complementary studies of mathematical modeling which were developed to test the efficiency of the works the government of Santa Catarina State proposed in order to improve water circulation is presented. The study was conducted using the MIKE 21 HD (hydrodynamic module) and AD (advection-dispersion module) models. The data basis of the modelling study consists of two field campaigns and long term monitoring performed by INPH in the framework of the PROVIDA programme.
