Abstract: The open channel flow through a simplified hydropower intake is modeled using a CFD software package with free surface modelling capability to evaluate its ability to accurately predict the intensity of free surface vortices that form at the intake. Comparison of the simulation results with preliminary data from a physical model of the intake suggests that the CFD model predicts the presence and shape of the vortices quite well but that it underestimates the rate of rotation of the vortex core and therefore does not reproduce the free surface depression observed in the experiment.
