Stream Temperature Observations and Equilibrium Temperatures in a River Basin

Abstract: In this paper, we reported monitoring results of the stream temperatures in the Ibogawa river basin which is located in Hyogo Prefecture, the western part of Japan, as well as examined the usefulness of the equilibrium temperature that was defined as a temperature satisfied with a steady-state in a heat balance equation. In the basin, 24 observation points were set up in order to monitor the stream temperatures in the whole basin extent. The spatial distributions of the monthly averaged stream temperatures showed that the temperature changes from the upper to downstream reaches were influenced largely by both the solar radiation and river discharge. Spectral characteristics of the temperature time series, and one-day moving averaged temperatures with meteorological and hydrological data were also discussed in detail. Then, we confirmed that the equilibrium temperature was very much useful for the examinations of the stream temperature changes in the whole river basin (cid: 1) because it could express the stream temperature fluctuations due to the meteorological condition changes very well.
