Analysis and Intercomparison of Two Two-Ways Coupled Circulation-Wave Model Systems for Nearshore Applications

Abstract: Hydrodynamic numerical models able to correctly simulate nearshore processes are essential for a variety of applications ranging from beach protection to search and rescue (S&R) activities and support to engineering operations. Within this context, the capability of correctly accounting for processes such as wetting-drying and wave-currents interactions is very desiderable both for research and practical applications. In the last decade there has been a considerable advance in these directions, both thanks to improvements in the theoretical background and to recent advances in the computer performances that allowed higher-resolution, long-term integrations and ensemble runs. Nevertheless, since the complexity and the non linearity of these processes naturally bring a large degree of uncertainty, scientists should devote efforts in trying to improve the understanding of the processes and perform comparisons among existing numerical tools. In this paper we present two examples of two-ways coupled numerical models, and an academic test-case comparing their potentialities in a coastal environments.
