Gate Operation for Water Quality Management in Seonakdong River

Abstract: The Seonakdong River basin is located in the west side of the Nakdong River, South Korea. The catchment area is 304. 1, and the stream length is 18. 5. The Seonakdong River passes through the agricultural delta plains and rice field. It can provide some degree of flood control capacity. Since the Daejeo and Noksan water gates were constructed in 1934, the water quality in the river has become worse. The Seonakdong River is an estuarine tributary of the Nakdong River and a reservoir-like river with water gates at the river mouth to protect the intrusion of saline water for the agricultural irrigation. The Seonakdong River is impounded stream whose flowrate is controlled by Daejeo and Noksan gates. The Daejeo gate is located at the upstream and Noksan gate is at the downstream of the Seonakdong River. The objective of this study is to determine proper flowrate for obtaining a good water quality. The measurement of flowrate was performed on the bridges at three sites in the Seonakdong River and the standard methods were used for the analysis of water samples. To manage the water quality, we should carefully select the most appropriate operating plan, considering possible water shortages and available water resources. This study will provide the data of the flowrate and water quality for unsteady water quality model as a numerical method to estimate water quality and transport of substances.
